TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Development Planning Minister or Bappenas Chief Suharso Monoarfa revealed that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo expected the new palace in the future capital city would showcase the country’s distinctive design. This will be different from the existing ones that feature colonial architecture.
“The President wants the palace building to follow the Indonesian distinctive style, while this [Jakarta Palace] is the legacy of [Dutch] colonialism,” said Suharso after a meeting with the President at the Jakarta Presidential Palace, Monday, November 18.
As reported widely, the government was determined to move the country’s administrative center from Jakarta to Penajem Paser Utara and Kutai Kertanegara of East Kalimantan. The relocation will commence gradually, and the construction was sought to start in 2020.
According to Suharso, the President wished the new capital could be the world’s best. Thus, the government needed to think carefully, thoroughly, and not hastily, he added.
“We want to have something good, something that can be an iconic palace in the world. So if we want to build it, we have to foresee how the city will look like after one hundred years,” Suharso said.
He said that his ministry would immediately form an authority body in December 2019 for the preparations, construction, and relocation of the new capital city. As instructed by President Jokowi, the new capital would have a concept of a smart city, smart government, and smart office.
