Edhy Prabowo to Give Seized Illegal Ships to Fishermen

14 November 2019 08:07 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaMaritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Edhy Prabowo said he would donate fishing boats previously seized by the previous minister, Susi Pudjiastuti, to fishermen. He conveyed the plan during a working visit to Batam City, Wednesday, November 13.

At the Maritime and Fisheries Monitoring Task Force (PSDKP) Headquarters in Batam, Edhy found at least 39 illegal fishing vessels which 29 of them had reached an inkracht. "We can still give the fishing boat to fishermen for free," said Edhy.

The ship would be handed over to fishermen in each region of Riau Islands province through their respective regional heads. "We will give it to the regional government, but recondition efforts of the vessels will be under the responsibility of each administration," he added.

However, before delivering the boat to fishermen, he would first study the permit. According to him, 29 fishing boats confiscated by the PSDKP were still worth for operation.

Not only for Riau Islands, Edhy mentioned that the idea would be applied to other regions.

The minister's plan answered the request of Lingga Regent, Alias Wello, who requested that the captured vessels be handed over to fishermen.

His visit to Batam was the first since he has been appointed as a minister to succeed Susi Pudjiastuti. In addition to visiting fish farms, Edhy Prabowo also inspected the largest fish distributor company in Batam.
