TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) revealed that ten areas of the capital had the potential of landslides or ground movement in November 2019.
The ten spots were located in South and East Jakarta, as quoted from the agency’s Twitter account @BPBDJakarta on Sunday, November 10.
In South Jakarta, they were Cilandak, Jagakarsa, Kebayoran Baru, Kebayoran Lama, Mampang Prapatan, Pancoran, Pasar Minggu, and Pesanggrahan, while in East Jakarta were Kramat Jati and Pasar Rebo
The potential of land movement in those areas was at the medium level. By means, the land would shift when rains fall quite heavily, especially in areas located near river valleys.
"The potential for ground movement is at a medium level, meaning that if rainfall is above normal, there will be a potential for landslides," said the agency spokesman Iwan Ibrahim when asked for confirmation in Jakarta, Sunday, November 10.
Most of the ten areas were situated next to river banks, cliffs, or slopes. "The areas [potential for land movement] tend to locate at the edge of the river," Iwan added.
He explained that observations and measurements regarding the potential for land movement were carried out by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG).
Iwan further appealed to sub-district heads and the public, especially those living in the ten mentioned spots, to remain vigilant and alert of possible ground movement or landslides considering Jakarta was entering the rainy season.
