TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A young scholar from Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Muhammad Al Fayyadl, expressed that the Religious Affairs Minister Fachrul Razi is oversimplifying the meaning of radicalism.
Al Fayyadl argued that the term is being used by the minister purely on the level of symbolism and stereotypes. He said that the main issue of religious people cannot just be determined by the matter of ideology alone.
“A much more crucial problem lies in the discrepancy and discrimination toward minority groups and also the religious commercialization and politicization for certain means,” said Al Fayyadl on November 7.
The NU scholar urged Fachrul to build a persuasive approach to plant a religious understanding that is inclusive and more tolerant.
“In principle, don’t ever target a certain group because it will worsen the social wounds and cause discord among Indonesians,” he said.
