Female Journalist Rohana Kudus Named National Hero

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Social Ministry has named Rohana Kudus or Ruhana Kuddus, the first female journalist from West Sumatra, as National Hero 2019.
The naming was based on the meeting of the Title, Order of Merit and Honors Council and President Joko Widodo or Jokowi on November 6, in addition to the Social Ministerial Circular No. 23/MS/A/09/2019 dated September 9 on the nomination of national heroes in 2019.
“The suggestion to grant a title of National Hero 2019 for the late Ruhana Kuddus is accepted,” said Social Empowerment Director-General Pepen Nazaruddin in a written statement, Thursday, November 7.
The award ceremony would take place at State Palace on November 8, 2019. The ministry invited West Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno and several heirs of the deceased.
Based on Tempo observation, Ruhana Kuddus born in Kota Gadang, Agam Regency, on December 20, 1884. In 1911, she established a school for women 'Kerajinan Amai Setia' (KAS) in Kota Gadang.
Apart from her enormous contribution to the education sector, Rohana Kudus was a journalist in a female newspaper Poetri Hindia. When the media was banned, Ruhana initiated to publish a newspaper Soenting Melajoe. She died in Jakarta, on August 17, 1972, at the age of 87.
