BNPB Envoy Attends World Tsunami Awareness Day

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) for System and Strategy Wisnu Widjaja attended the commemoration of the World Tsunami Awareness Day 2019 held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Tuesday. In his paper themed "Prepare to be Safe: Indonesian Way to Deal with Tsunami", Wisnu shared Indonesia's experience in facing tsunamis, either tectonic or non-tectonic, the Center for Data and Information and Public Relations Service of BNPB, said in a press statement released Wednesday.

Wisnu further unveiled Indonesia's efforts at increasing its capacity to face tsunamis, including the use of data and innovation technology naRISK, and MHEWS, the application of ecosystem-based disaster risk mitigation approaches, and the construction of vertical evacuation shelters.

Wisnu attended the event to represent BNPB Chief Doni Monardo invited by the Indonesian permanent representative to the UN as one of the speakers at a panel discussion.

The Indonesian permanent representative to the UN is one of the event's organizers, along with representatives of several other countries.

The panel discussion was aimed at identifying challenges and serving as a means of learning to mitigate tsunami risks, reconstruct strong buildings and impose early warning system, among others.
