TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The South Jakarta Metro Police arrested a man who frequented hotel conference rooms to steal laptops. The man, 53, was arrested when he was about to commit the crime at a hotel in Rawajati, Pancoran.
South Jakarta Metro Police Chief Sr. Comr. Bastoni Purnama said yesterday that the suspect had stolen laptops from hotels repeatedly. He looked for meeting rooms used by visitors and snatched unattended laptops, usually during lunch breaks.
The suspect, DWK, often visited hotels—all dressed up in business attires. He came into the front lobby with his face down, "so his face won't show up in the security camera," Bastoni said, November 5.
DWK sold the laptops to a fence in Cibubur, East Jakarta, for Rp3million to Rp5million each. The fence had been named a suspect and the police are now hunting him down.
"DWK admitted that he committed the crime five times; stealing and selling 12 units of laptops," Bastoni said.
DWK is charged with Article 363 of the Criminal Code, facing a maximum sentence of up to seven years in jail.
