TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investments, Luhut Pandjaitan, had persuaded the Chinese government to give import duty leniency for Indonesian goods.
This was expressed by the minister after meeting President Xi Jinping in person at the opening of the China International Import Expo (CIIE) on November 5.
“I mentioned about the latest condition of Indonesia’s export to China. Surely I also asked him for leniency or total expungement of China’s import tariff on Indonesian-produces steel,” said Luhut Pandjaitan in a written statement on Wednesday.
Other items in the Minister’s list were pineapples, birds nest, palm oil products, nickel ores, copper, lead, and bauxite. Luhut Pandjaitan asserts that China is a potential market for Indonesian products as the country is home to over 1.4 billion population.
In exchange, the minister offers China improvements in Indonesia’s business regulations which intends to provide business certainty and ease of investments. According to the release, Luhut said that President Xi Jinping will consider Indonesia’s offer.
