TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Senior Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan firmly denies the Twitter allegation accusing that he staged his own attack, which has permanently scarred his eye.
The Tweet linked to a TV interview on Novel who was undergoing surgery in Singapore. The twitter user that uploaded the video alleges that Novel’s condition during the interview on April 18, 2017, suggests that he is physically fine despite having been splashed with liquid acid.
In fact, Novel confirmed that the video of the interview was conducted between April to July of 2017 at the Singapore hospital, not long after the acid attack on him on April 11, 2017.
“The video was taken on April or July 2017,” said Novel in a text message to Tempo on Tuesday, November 5.
He recalled the interview was taken after he underwent osteo-odonto keratoprosthesis surgery to fix his cornea. His surgery also involves a surgical method that adds a new placenta membrane for both his eyes in an attempt to grow back dead cells.
Novel Baswedan asserts that people would think that his eyes are in a healthy physical condition prior to the surgery, however, the truth lies within as he states; “There were many dead cells [in my eyes] that caused me to lack severe vision,” said Novel.
He said that KPK employees can attest to the surgery he went through in Singapore and that his physical appearance does not represent the actual condition of his eyes.
