TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Jokowi has given Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim 100 days to create an application system for Indonesia’s education sector.
“The minister said to give him 100 days to prepare and design the app. From what the minister presented to me, I believe that he can achieve it,” said Jokowi in dialogue with journalists at the Presidential Palace on Friday, November 1.
However, the president fully understands that rising to such a challenge would not be an easy task and take some time, especially considering that Indonesia has a major education gap among regions, the difficulty of managing 3.5 million teachers, 300,000 schools, and 50 million students.
“We have gone dozens of years. We will not be able to reach such vastness in management if we depend on a manual system. This needs courage and breakthroughs that we don’t usually practice,” said Jokowi.
That was one of the significant considerations behind President Jokowi’s decision to name Nadiem Makarim as the education minister. However, Jokowi realizes that results will not come instantly and expects to benefit from Nadiem’s work after 2.5 years.
