TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Council (DPRD) member from the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), William Aditya Sarana, responded to Governor Anies Baswedan’s aggressive response toward his finding on Jakarta’s questionable glue budget plan.
The governor previously accused William of being an attention seeker, even though the young politician maintains that the entire Jakarta Council are merely playing their constitutional role in monitoring the city’s budget plan.
“It has nothing to do with seeking attention,” said the PSI politician in a written statement on Thursday, October 31.
According to William, he publicly revealed the budget since the Jakarta Administration - led by Anies Baswedan - was not transparent with the budget draft that should be publicly accessible. He said that obscuring the budget plan only curbs the public’s right to monitor where their taxes are being spent.
“Why try to hide the budget plan? Give room for DPRD members to provide criticism. Give the public room to participate,” William insisted.
How Anies Handles the Situation
Previous reports saw Governor Anies Baswedan accused William of being an attention seeker for the fact that the youngest Jakarta Council member went public on the oddities in Jakarta’s 2020 budget draft. Anies claimed that he had already been informed about the oddities and had ordered his employees to fix the problem.
Not only did the governor blame William for going public with the problem, but Anies Baswedan also defended that the budget fiasco was caused by the city’s e-budgeting system that “lacks intelligence.”
William regretted the fact that Anies diverted the issue and blamed his staffers and the e-budgeting system for the Rp82 billion glue budget plan. He urged the governor to upload the actual 2020 budget draft to apbd.jakarta.go.id. for the sake of transparency.
“The regional budget (APBD) comes from the people, which is why the public has a right to know what their money is used for,” said the PSI politician. “Anies is only proving the suspicion that there is a serious problem in how he leads.”
