TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) chair Asfinawati challenged Mahfud MD to prove his commitment to issuing a government regulation in lieu of law or Perpu on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) after serving as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs.
"So, Pak Mahfud’s first ideal task in the government is to release KPK Perpu," said Asfinawati when met in Wahid Hasyim area, Central Jakarta, Monday, October 28.
Before being assigned as a minister, Mahfud was among the figures who encouraged President Joko Widodo or Jokowi to immediately issue a regulation to revoke the newly-ratified KPK policy.
The former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court even reportedly visited the State Palace to ask for the President's advice regarding the issuance of Perpu. He also mentioned that it was an emergency to pass a new regulation.
However, Jokowi appointed Mahfud to fill in his second-term cabinet. Even so, YLBHI still awaited Mahfud's commitment.
"We know he was the one who contacted Pak Jokowi intensely to issue KPK Perpu. I think the success benchmark (for Mahfud as Coordinating Minister) within the first month is issuing the KPK Perpu," said Asfinawati.
When asked about the Perpu, Mahfud MD could not provide firm answers. He asked all parties to be patient waiting for the plan to issue a Perpu. Mahfud claimed on Monday, Oct. 28 that suggestions about the issue had been accommodated and discussed thoroughly.
