TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Agus Rahardjo suggested President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo establish the Ministry of Supervision and Control should the government seek to focus on averting corruption.
"My advice to the government is, if they really want to focus on the [corruption] prevention, they should appoint a minister of supervision and control," said Agus in Sukabumi, Friday, Oct. 25.
Agus opined the ministry was necessary to speed up the implementation of corruption prevention systems, such as e-budgeting and e-planning. Both systems have been applied by only a few regional administrations, including Jakarta and Surabaya.
Besides, such a ministry was required to replace the existence of inspectorates, both in ministries and regional administrations that he deemed poor at overseeing deviations.
“There was no report from the inspectorates, while in fact, they acknowledged there were irregularities,” Agus added.
Moreover, he was concerned about the revisions of the KPK Law passed by the government and the House of Representatives (DPR). However, he said he had good faith in President Jokowi, that the latter had his own strategy in combating corruption.
Agus said that perhaps the president wanted the KPK to focus more on exposing major cases and reducing its sting operations. "That’s possible," he said.
