NasDem: Naming of the Attorney General is Politically Motivated

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the NasDem Party central executive board (DPP), Irma Suryani Chaniago argues that the naming of ST Burhanuddin as the new Attorney General is not due to his professional background, but rather because Burhanuddin is the sibling of PDIP politician TB Hasanuddin.
“No one is professional nowadays, it is all politically motivated,” said Irma to Tempo on Thursday, October 24.
Irma questions the polemic that once emerged, calling for the Attorney General to not be influenced by political parties. This was mentioned by a number of Jokowi - Ma’ruf Amin’s coalition parties that strongly rejects an Attorney General from political parties. PDIP secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto even said that strategic positions must be given to the utmost responsible individual to uphold the law fairly and without any intervention.
“Yesterday there was a ruckus if the Attorney General is picked from political parties, alleging that it would turn the AG into a party’s tool. It’s best if we stay consistent,” said Irma today.
Following the oath in the office on Wednesday, ST Burhanuddin was reluctant to replying to journalists’ questions regarding his relationship with TB Hasanuddin and preferred to move away from journalists. TB Hasanuddin maintains that his younger sibling is indeed a professional and is not active in politics.
