GoJek Drivers Comment on Nadiem Makarim's Promotion into Govt

23 October 2019 08:13 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaResponses were mixed from GoJek drivers in response to Nadiem Makarim’s decision to resign from the company he established to pursue a future as a candidate for President Jokowi’s state ministers.

One GoJek driver Tempo met in Tangerang, Asep Burhanudin (35), was among the drivers who viewed positively Nadiem’s promotion into government.

“He is the owner who established the company from zero. So, even though he has left GoJek to become a State Minister, the future of GoJek as a company will remain bright,” said Asep as we asked for his opinion on the matter on Tuesday, October 22.

Echoing Asep’s statement, another driver we asked, Yoyo (31), was also positive in welcoming the news of Nadiem’s resignation from GoJek. He believes the challenge given to Nadiem by President Jokowi will be executed well.

“I believe he can do it. Nadiem built GoJek from scratch up to the giant firm it is now,” said Yoyo.

Concerns were expressed by some

However, there are also concerns voiced by drivers, as one GoJek driver who requested to remain anonymous highlighted the company’s regulatory changes voiced by drivers.

“The important thing is to not put forth personal agenda. We hope drivers will have a prosperous future,” the man said. “Him deciding to leave the company, I am concerned that GoJek in the future will not be as prosperous.”

Previously reported, Igun Wicaksono from the motorcycle drivers’ unity Garda Indonesia said that the welfare of GoJek drivers have yet been fulfilled by Nadiem Makarim as he was still in the company.

“How about his competence in creating welfare for Indonesians when his corporation is yet able to do that for its partner drivers,” said Igun on Monday, October 21.

Igun asserts that the company as an online ride-hailing app has indeed grown, however, he said that the profits are mainly felt by GoJek corporates. Meanwhile, drivers always get the short end of the stick in terms of income bonuses generated from being a partner for GoJek
