TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo during the past two days had summoned more than 20 figures to State Palace in Jakarta, who were predicted to fill in his second-term cabinet.
Among dozens of candidates who were called in, many claimed of being in the dark of which post they would be assigned to. They said that the President only provided a clue during the discussion at Palace.
However, several ministerial candidates seemed to have the information and revealed a specific spot they would lead. Here is the list:
1. Siti Nurbaya Bakar
The NasDem politician said that she had been told to resume her job as Environment and Forestry Minister for the next cabinet.
“I have asked for Bapak President’s permission to mention that I would continue my incomplete tasks in light of the environment,” said Siti Nurbaya at State Palace, Jakarta, Tuesday, October 22.
2. Syahrul Yasin Limpo
The former governor of South Sulawesi Syahrul Yasin Limpo claimed he did not know about his position in the upcoming cabinet. “But he [President] asked me many questions on how to fulfill the basic need of 267 million people, especially those about agriculture, plantation, and forestry,” said Syahrul today.
3. Juliari Batubara
The PDIP politician Juliari Batubara was also summoned to State Palace today. After the meeting, he said that he was asked specifically to manage a program of poverty alleviation and measures to suppress the poverty rate, as well as natural disaster mitigation.
When reporters quizzed whether he would become social minister, Juliari instantly smiled. “I cannot comment about it because the talk must be preceded between President and Ibu party’s chair related to the post allocation for PDIP in the cabinet.”
4. Ida Fauziyah
The deputy head of the National Awakening Party (PKB) Ida Fauziah admitted that she was mandated a job to manage employment affairs in the President’s Cabinet II.
“I was asked by Pak Jokowi to assist him in creating employment and implement the employment card,” said the former lawmaker at State Palace today, Oct. 22.
5. Basuki Hadimuljono
After having a lunch meeting with the President today afternoon, outgoing minister of public works and housing Basuki Hadimuljono explained that Jokowi instructed him to continue the infrastructure development, the same post as his previous one.
6. Mahfud MD
Former Chief Justice of Indonesia's Constitutional Court Mahfud MD said that he was asked to be part of upcoming cabinet ministers after being summoned by the President on Monday, October 21. Mahfud exposed that they discussed issues of human rights violations, soft law enforcement, corruption, and deradicalization.
7. Prabowo Subianto
Following President’s call to Palace on Monday afternoon, Gerindra Party chief patron Prabowo Subianto said that he was officially demanded to help cement Jokowi’s cabinet. He also specifically mentioned the defense sector.
“He [Jokowi] allowed me to announce [that I will] help in the defense sector,” said Prabowo on Monday at State Palace.
8. Zainudin Amali
The top politician from Golkar Party Zainudin Amali hinted that he would be a minister for youth and sports sector. Amali made the statement after today’s meeting with the President. However, he said that the ministerial nomenclature was not fixed to be titled Menpora as in Jokowi’s first-term cabinet.
9. Johnny G. Plate
NasDem secretary-general Johnny G. Plate said that he was also instructed by President to help in the latter’s new cabinet, especially in the sector of digitalization, development of startup business, unicorn, and regulation on data privacy that had been so far overseen by Communication and Informatics Ministry.
“Bapak President did not specifically mention the portfolio. I definitely will quickly move to bring Indonesia to the future,” said Plate while laughing at State Palace today.
10. Agus Suparmanto
Another politician from PKB, Agus Suparmanto, was expected to be part of the President’s second-term cabinet. He claimed to have been tasked to manage commodity problems.
“I was tasked by the President in the economic sector. [We] discussed commodities in the country and abroad.”9
11. Bahlil Lahadalia
Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (Hipmi) head Bahlil Lahadalia said that he would be positioned in the ministry of economy in the upcoming cabinet. However, he claimed he had not been told about the exact post.
“[The post] would be related to economic affairs. It could be micro, small, medium enterprises (MSMEs), investment, trade. We will see later, only God and Jokowi who know,” said Bahlil today, Oct. 22.
12. Teten Masduki
Former presidential chief of staff Teten Masduki said that he would help President Jokowi in the new cabinet in the people’s economic sector.
“I was used to being tasked by him [the President] in any post. This time, I was asked to manage the public, in people’s affairs, to boost people’s economy,” said Teten at State Palace, Tuesday, October 22.
