  • TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Islam Defenders Front (FPI) stated that it will maintain distance with Gerindra Party Chairman Prabowo Subianto who recently decided to join the government’s coalition parties under the leadership of President Jokowi and VP Ma’ruf Amin.

FPI spokesman Munarman said that his organization has anticipated the move by Gerindra’s leader and is why they decided to hold yet another meeting entitled the ‘Ijtima Ulama IV’ that took place a while ago.

“The Ijtima Ulama IV at the time rejected a repressive type of authority and maintain distance to the government in power,” said Munarman to Tempo today.

Another collective agreement from the meeting was to reject any legal verdicts that go against the principle of justice.

“We continue to try to be consistent in what we have agreed upon,” said the FPI spokesman.

The hardline Islamic group is one of the main backers, apart from GNPF Ulama, of Prabowo Subianto and Sandiaga Uno during the 2019 presidential election.
