TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Strong winds hit Sumber Brantas Village, Gunungsari Village and Sumbergondo Village in Batu City, East Java, since Saturday night, October 19. The weather had paralyzed residents' activities until Sunday night.
"Only disaster management officers are allowed at the sites," the city's Regional Disaster Management (BPBD) staff Achmad Choirur Rochim said on Monday, October 21.
The worst damages are seen at Jurangkuali and Lemahputih, two hamlets in Sumber Brantas Village that are adjacent to the Cangar hot spring tourist attraction. This location connects Batu City with Pacet Sub-district, Mojokerto Regency.
The severe wind also took the life of one villager. Sodiq, a resident of Gunungsari Village, Bumiaji District, was reportedly killed after being hit by a tree. Residents also complain of short breaths from inhaling dust and sand carried by the wind.
Given the life-threatening situation, all residents have been evacuated to five locations. Pregnant women, infants and children and elderly people who need special treatment are sheltering at the Mayor's Office House Complex.
