TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Chief of Police Gen. Tito Karnavian reminded about staging demonstrations ahead of the presidential inauguration. He asserted that the police will detain anyone who stages anarchist protests.
"We use discretion, in addition to appealing, we also will not issue permits if intelligence said that action is not safe," Tito said during the morning assembly for the security safeguarding of the presidential inauguration held this morning in Monas, October 17.
Earlier, Kodam Jaya Commander Maj. Gen. Eko Margiyono said that student demonstrations are banned ahead of the president's inauguration.
"So if there is a demonstration, they would be deemed unregistered or illegal," Eko said after attending a coordination meeting with DPR members about the security measures for president's inauguration, yesterday at the Parliament Complex in Senayan.
Meanwhile, President Joko Widodo or Jokowi said he did not order the police to ban demonstrations during the inauguration day. "No prohibition," Jokowi said shortly after meeting with a number of MPR leaders at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Wednesday, October 16.
Jokowi said that the rights to stage demonstrations are protected by the constitution. If there is a ban on demonstrations, Jokowi asked reporters to ask the police about it directly.
"Demonstrations are guaranteed by the constitution," Jokowi said.
