  • TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) is set to hold an executive meeting (Rapim) to discuss Ma'ruf Amin's position as the council’s chairman, Tuesday, October 15.

"Yes, it is true. [It will be held] at 10:00 am inshallah," MUI Deputy Secretary-General Amirsyah Tambunan confirmed to Tempo today.

The council’s previous national meeting or Rakernas V ordered Ma'ruf to complete his term of office until 2020. However, Amirsyah said that the decision was not final and would be followed up in today’s meeting as concurrent positions are prohibited under the council’s rules and internal bylaws (AD/ART).

"So, the executive meeting will decide it later," Amirsyah remarked.

Ma'ruf will be inaugurated as Vice President of the 2019-2024 period on Sunday, October 20. Based on the MUI’s AD/ART, the council’s chair is not allowed to hold concurrent positions.

The running mate of Jokowi also acknowledged that he could not hold another position after being appointed later. "I am not allowed to concurrently hold the MUI chair," said Ma'ruf during his visit to Wiranto at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital, Jakarta, Sunday, October 13.

According to Ma'ruf Amin, should the Rakernas concluded that he is required to complete his office term, then the solution is to accelerate the national conference or Munas to be held in 2019. "Perhaps the national conference can be expedited to appoint a new chairman," he said.
