TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo had just issued president’s decree No.63/2019 overseeing the use of the Indonesian language for all public speeches, documents, and buildings, which will mandate properties to be named in Indonesian.
The president signed the presidential decree in consideration with Presidential Decree No.16/2010 that has yet to oversee the use of the Indonesian language in other sectors.
One of the Decree’s Articles mandates the names of buildings, apartments, or housing, trade, and business complex to adopt the Indonesian language. That will only be commanded for properties owned by Indonesian citizens viewed officially as an Indonesian entity.
As for traditional buildings that have historical value, the law allows the use of regional languages for the property’s names.
