TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Communication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara has given a signal that before the year’s end, there will be a new unicorn to follow OVO, Gojek, Bukalapak, Tokopedia, and Traveloka. He linked the startup emergence to the State Budget for the education sector that reaches Rp500 trillion per year.
“We allocate Rp500 trillion per year for the education sector, one percent of it is Rp5 trillion, but the GMV (Gross Merchandise Value) at Rp5 trillion per year is quite high,” said Rudiantara in Bukalapak office, South Jakarta, Tuesday, Oct. 8.
When reporters asked for confirmation whether the next unicorn will be Ruang Guru, the minister balked at providing the details. “I cannot expose the name because the transaction is not with the government but the investors,” he said.
Rudiantara added that there is e-commerce with a valuation of up to US$10 billion in a year. “So, next year inshallah, our digital economy will amount to US$ 130 billion,” he remarked.
According to the minister, Indonesia must be proud to rank the top in the digital economy compared to other ASEAN countries.
Previously, Rudiantara announced the digital wallet firm OVO snatched the unicorn status as the firm's valuation had exceeded over US$1 billion.
