Press Council Decries Violence against Journalists

2 October 2019 09:50 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPress Council condemned acts of violence and intimidation committed by security officers against journalists while covering demonstrations against the ratification of the Criminal Code draft bill or RKUHP on September 24 in several cities.

"We concern and condemn all acts of violence, intimidation, and persecution carried out by the security forces against journalists who are performing journalistic activities," said the council deputy chairman Hendry CH Bangun in a written statement, Wednesday, October 2.

The council also appealed to all parties not to obstruct, intimidate, and prosecute media reporters while doing journalistic activities. The National Police are also urged to take stern action against personnel involved in that violence. "[They must be] processed legally."

Moreover, the council called on all press companies to always prioritize the safety of their employees by equipping them with safety devices while on duty, especially in areas where riots potentially occur.

Meanwhile, journalists who experienced violence are instructed to immediately report to the press company and the police within 24 hours. The press company must also assist them during the submission of the police reports.

"Press Council will coordinate with National Police based on the 2017 MoU," Hendry concluded.
