TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law, and Security Affairs Wiranto said the Free Papua Movement (OPM) and the leader of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), Benny Wenda, were the masterminds behind the deadly Wamena riot that claimed the lives of 30 people.
“The OPM and Benny Wenda were trying to ignite massive riots and expose to the international world that there are powers striving to liberate Papua and West Papua,” said Wiranto in a press conference at his headquarters in Central Jakarta on Monday.
He said the two forces conspired to stir rioting in Papua so as to step into the global spotlight through the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York.
However, Wiranto said, their attempts--despite the deaths of over 30 people--went awry as no country had taken the Papuan issue seriously.
“Thank God their attempts failed and they failed to get the attention from the human rights summit in Swiss. They met a dead end, too, at the UN, and no country has listened to their aspirations that are against the 2524 resolution regarding the Papuan referendum passed in 1969,” said Wiranto.
