TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police (Polri) confirmed that its members had clashed with marines from the TNI at the Indonesian Navy’s Pati Lumba-Lumba homestead on Wednesday, September 25, at roughly around 21:35 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

Events leading to the clash saw a number of protestors escaping police pursuit by entering the Navy homestead. However, police were asked not to enter as the marines plan to take the students out themselves.

This caused disagreement from the police members and after a brief heated argument, police members at the location destroyed a Navy post and even reportedly shot teargas aimed at a member of the marines.

“Communication has been established with the Commander in the field to cool down the situation,” said National Police’s spokesman Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo on Thursday.

Dedi maintained that Police and the national armed forces (TNI) will constantly synergize with each other in conducting their duties.
