DPR Speaker: Students Did Not Start Chaos

25 September 2019 15:51 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) speaker Bambang Soesatyo was informed that the university students did not start the riot on Tuesday night, September 24.

“I have just received a report that last night’s riot was not started by students,” he said at Pelni Hospital, Wednesday, September 25, after visiting the students under medical treatment.

Bambang said the information was conveyed by the students and the university student executive body (BEM) who joined the demonstration before the House’s building.

“I have only got the report, and several BEM said they had retrieved when the riot occurred,” the House speaker added.

He also claimed that he continuously monitored the students’ acts, especially those who sustained injuries.

Thousands of students from numerous universities staged a protest in front of the DPR building, Tuesday, September 24. They demanded the House withdraw the ratification of Criminal Code draft bill (RKUHP) and several other problematic draft bills.

In the afternoon, the demonstration led to chaos after the security officers dispersed the mass. The chaos continued until late night in several points of Senayan.

Bambang claimed that he planned to meet the protesters, but he was hampered by tear gas fired by the police towards the students.

“I’d welcome students who visit DPR to deliver their aspirations, and we will later see what we can do in our capacity as the DPR,” said the Golkar politician.
