TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly admits there are contrasting opinions between President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and House (DPR) members in adjourning the controversial draft criminal code bill (RKUHP).
According to the State Minister, the DPR persists on amending the law before the current legislators’ term ends.
“There is that sense of eagerness,” said Yasonna at the Senayan parliamentary complex on Monday, September 23.
This discussion arose during the meeting between House members and the President on Monday noon. The minister maintains that the government intends to study and introduce the draft bill to members of the public.
Minister Yasonna concluded that the meeting on Monday did not produce any decisions about the bill’s amendment and asserts to officially inform the government’s stand to House of Representatives in Tuesday’s plenary meeting.
“We will request for [it to be postponed], but it must be voiced in the plenary meeting. We will lobby,” said the minister.
Prior to Monday’s meeting with the president, DPR Speaker Bambang Soesatyo voiced his optimism upon passing the RKUHP criminal code draft bill before September ends. He said that plenary meetings at the DPR are scheduled for Tuesday, September 24; Thursday, September 26; and Monday, September 30.
