Losses from Riau Forest Fire Reach Rp50tn: Study Center

20 September 2019 08:25 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaCoordinator of Environmental Study Center in Riau University, Dr. Suwondo MS, estimated that Riau likely incurs material losses of up to Rp50 trillion from haze caused by land and forest fires covering the province since the last few months.

“The losses amounted to Rp50 trillion come from disruptions in sectors of trade, service, culinary, and agriculture as well as flight delay,” said Suwondo in Pekanbaru, Thursday, September 19.

Suwondo said the impact of the haze triggered a double loss for all sectors of life, especially the economy, social, ecology, Agriculture and farming, service, etc.

The current facts showed that Riau will suffer the same losses like that of the devastating wildfire in 2015, Suwondo added.

“If this year’s haze disaster lasts longer or similar to that of the haze in 2015, it will be more harmful, and Riau will suffer economic losses of over Rp120 trillion, as happened in 2015,” he said.

Suwondo further mentioned that the total size of wildfire in 2015 was 500,000 hectares, while the size of forest and land burned this year has reached 300,000 hectares.
