Police Nab Five Corporations Responsible for Forest Fires

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police (Polri) announced that it has named PT Bumi Hijau Lestari and one of its board of directors as suspects of the land and forest fires that have plagued South Sumatra in the passing weeks.

“AK (Alvaro Khadafi) is the operational director of the company PT Bumi Hijau Lestari,” says Polri Spokesman Brigadier General Dedi Prasetyo as Tempo confirmed on Thursday, September 19.

PT Bumi Hijau Lestari, together with Alvaro deemed to have failed to prevent forest fires for the fact the company decided to only mobilize six firefighters to put out fires across a vast land covering 2,500 hectares.

“This is the initial suspicion,” said Dedi.

Four other corporations have also been named suspect of the international haze problem that consists of PT Sumber Sawit Sejahtera located in Riau, PT Palmindo Gemilang Kencana in Central Kalimantan, PT SAP in West Kalimantan, and PT Sepanjang Inti Surya Utama (PT SISU) in West Kalimantan.

As for individual suspects responsible for the forest fires, the national police named 230 people as suspects that are spread across seven provinces that will face multiple charges if found guilty.
