FInance Ministry Says Lapindo Still Owes Rp1.7tn to the State

19 September 2019 10:29 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Finance Ministry said that PT Lapindo Brantas Inc. and PT Minarak Lapindo Jaya have not paid off their debts to the state. The two companies owe a total of Rp1,763 trillion, including interest and penalties.

"The last payment was Rp5 billion made in December 2018," the ministry's Director General of State Assets Isa Rachmatarwata said on Wednesday, September 18.

To date, Isa said, Lapindo still has not paid off debt that was due on July 10, 2019. However, he said the company routinely communicates with the Finance Ministry

"They're not ignoring us, but that doesn’t mean they are paying. They give us updates and reports every week or every two weeks," Isa said. "But what we want is for them to pay."

Isa said the ministry had sent the first billing letter some time ago. Now they are preparing to send a second billing letter in December 2019.

In July, Isa had said that the debt situation could lead to the confiscation of both companies' assets, provided they still fail to make the payment after three billing statements are sent.
