TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - To put out a fire burning its forests and lands and causing haze pollution, the Central Kalimantan Government on Tuesday, September 17, began the process of cloud seeding. This is done by scattering 1.5 tons of salt as hygroscopic material to create artificial rain.

KAL Captain Irvan, the field coordinator of water-bombing at Central Kalimantan's Forest Fire Task Force, said his team received a notice from the Palangka Raya Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) that there were clouds that supported artificial rain. Immediately, he said, his team scattered the salt.

"We scattered 1.5 tons of salt in two cloud spots in areas bordering South and Central Kalimantan," he said on Tuesday. "We hope it can bring rain to Central Kalimantan.

Irvan said his team could not determine when artificial rain procedure would be carried out again. He said they would wait for further information and instructions from the Palangka Raya BMKG.

The smoke situation caused by land and forest fires in Kalimantan continues to worsen. The Air Pollution Index in Palangka Raya City has reached a dangerous level. Since Monday, September 16, students were told not to go to school as instructed by Governor Sugianto Sabran.
