47 Evacuated as Mount Karangetang Erupts

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Sitaro regency, North Sulawesi evacuated 16 families or 47 Winangun villagers, Siau Barat Utara sub-district as Mount Karangetang erupted today, Thursday, September 12.

“They have to be evacuated to an evacuation site near the Sangihe-Talaud Christian Evangelical Church (GMIST),” said Sitaro BPBD spokesman Agus Wibowo.

The agency’s quick response team also conducted a quick study and called on people to stay away from the summit outside the four-kilometer radius and wear a mask.

The regency's administration has also distributed aid such as basic needs to the refugees.

As reported earlier, Mount Karangetang saw increasing activities and its status raised to Alert level III. Data on losses and casualties have yet to be reported.
