Mining Mafias May Benefit From the KPK Law Revision

11 September 2019 13:06 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The coalition against natural resources graft states that revising the KPK Law will benefit mafias of the mining industry.

“I see a crucial issue that has great significance from the KPK Law revision. Who will benefit the death of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK)? Well, the mining industry mafias will,” said coalition member Iqbal Damanik in a discussion regarding the matter in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 10.

Nearing the end of the current House of Representatives (DPR) tenure, House members agreed to revise the KPK Law stated in Law No.30/2002 on the act of eradicating corruption. On Thursday’s plenary meeting, and as an initiative, the House agreed to revise the law.

It is widely agreed that revising the KPK Law will eventually eradicate the independency of the anti-graft agency which will later help enrich mining mafias and control the handling of permits in regards to the mining industry.

The second and third benefit for mining mafias, he says, is through attempts in weakening the Law and its policymakers while also politicizing energy by reducing public participation in the matter.

KPK fights those three attempts. Several known cases of corruption starts with a change within the law,” said Iqbal.
