House Deputy Speaker Backs Jokowi's Papuan State Palace Idea

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives (DPR) deputy speaker Fahri Hamzah expressed support for President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s intention to construct a presidential state palace in Papua as it reflects a revolutionized mentality and maritime axis.
“It is very important to have a physical presence in Papua. An establishment of a palace in Papua is a great physical symbolism,” said Fahri at the parliamentary complex on Tuesday.
The House deputy maintains that he had long pitched the idea and would definitely agree if the Capital City of Indonesia is moved to the land of Papua. He also said that Indonesia must get used to the Asia-Pacific tradition as Papua is one of the significant areas in the Pacific.
“This means that the largest island in the Pacific other than Australia is Papua,” said Fahri Hamzah.
Fahri also suggests for the government to re-establish the operations of Biak airport and expand the regions within the vast land of Papua. He said that there should be at least six provinces and a number of districts.
“Let’s not talk about the population but rather about the number of people and the vastness of the territory. We are obliged to make that island a prosperous one,” said Fahri.
