Jusuf Kalla Demands Jakarta Continue Facilitating Asylum Seekers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla through Foreign Affairs Ministry demanded Jakarta provincial administration remain open the ex-Kodim building in Kalideres, West Jakarta, to accommodate hundreds of asylum seekers.
“The message is delivered by the ministry, informing that Pak VP wants the location to still be opened,” said Jakarta National and Political Unity Office (Kesbangpol) head Taufan Bakri in the City Hall, Tuesday, September 10.
Taufan reiterated that the city administration decided to further accommodate the refugees a place until the central government obtains solutions for them.
He stressed that Jakarta is only a facilitator as requested by the government. “The problem handling is on the central government, Jakarta only facilitates it,” Taufan added.
According to the Kesbangpol head, some 390 refugees are living in the building. As for the aid, Jakarta is still determined to stop the aid distribution since August due to lack of budget.
Previously, the refugee task force at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs gave the asylum seekers time until September 8 to occupy the building in Kalideres. While earlier, Jakarta had demanded the location to be shut off.
