Internet Still Down in 6 Papua Areas

10 September 2019 11:03 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The of Communication and Information Ministry is still blocking the internet in six districts and cities in Papua and West Papua. The ministry believes that situations in the areas have not fully returned to normal.

Previously, the government had gradually gave back internet services in Papua and West Papua since last Wednesday until Monday. Ferdinandus Setu, acting head of the ministry's Public Relations Bureau, said that internet access has returned to the city of Jayapura, and the regencies of Jayapura, Mimika, and Jayawijaya.

Two other cities that still don’t have internet services are Manokwari and Sorong.

"We will continue to monitor the situation over the next day or two," Ferdinandus said in an official statement, Monday, September 9.

According to the ministry's records, 25 out of 29 regencies/cities in Papua have had their internet access back. Among the areas are Puncak Jaya, Asmat, Nduga, Biak Numfor, Nabire and others.

In West Papua, areas that have regained internet access include Fak Fak, Raja Ampat, Bintuni Bay, South Manokwari, Arfak Mountains and Sorong Regency, among others.

The Indonesian government shut down internet access in Papua and West Papua after deciding there had been too many misleading information spreading in the internet. Most of the hoaxes and fake news, the government said, happened during August 30, with 72,500 URLs identified as posting them. By September 6, the number of this URLs have declined to 6,060.
