TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Land Transportation Director-General Budi Setiyadi said the traffic accident in KM 91 Cipularang toll road was caused by two overloaded and over-dimension trucks, which were up to 300 percent and 70 cm, respectively.
Besides the road conditions, Budi considered the overloaded and over-dimension trucks (ODOL) condition as one of the main causes of the incident that claimed nine lives and injured eight people.
The truck containing sands experienced brake failure, and the other truck which was behind the sand truck tried to help but unfortunately, it also had faulty brakes, Budi explained.
He then asked the police to thoroughly investigate the case and question not only truck drivers but also the owners of the goods.
He said he is coordinating with the Toll Road Regulatory Agency (BPJT) to develop a system to detect ODOL in the toll gates, so those trucks could be prohibited to pass the toll road.
“I demand BPTJ head to expedite the project, so we will see zero ODOL by 2020,” he added.
Budi continued to say that he will hold a coordination meeting related to the deadly traffic accident in Cipularang toll road with several institutions on Friday, September 6. They include police, BPJT, state toll operator PT Jasa Marga Tbk., Public Works and Housing Ministry, and the National Transportation Safety Commission (KNKT).
