TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of fighters from Indonesia and abroad will be joining the festival of pencak silat martial arts at Yogyakarta's Pencak Malioboro Festival 6 from September 6 to 8, 2019.
"As of today, approximately 6,200 people have registered to join the event. They are from the local area Yogyakarta, regionals in Java, Kalimantan, and Sumatera province, as well as from overseas countries," festival committee member, Yosi Tangtungan, stated in Yogyakarta, Tuesday.
The committee member noted that as many as 30 foreigners from Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Hungary, and Japan had registered to participate.
They will be accommodated on the festival's Pencak Wisata Budaya agenda, which is aimed at promoting pencak silat and Indonesia's culture to the world.
Through this, foreign participants will learn the Indonesian traditional pencak silat from many different communities. They will also learn how to make the "blangkon", a traditional Javanese hat, and try traditional archery, "jemparingan".
"This agenda is only for foreigners. Last year, all the foreign participants were Germans with a martial arts background," Tangtungan added.
