TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Public Works and Public Housing Ministry is allocating Rp100 billion for the reconstruction and renovations of building in Jayapura that were damaged by the riots. Waves of protests and demonstrations in Papua that led to unrest at the end of last month had left numerous offices vandalized and torched on Thursday, August 29.
Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said the budget of Rp100 billion will be used to rebuild government building and offices starting next week.
According to Basuki, the Rp100 billion restoration fund will be allocated in the 2019 National Expenditure Budget (APBN).
He said that the offices that suffered heaviest damages are the Papua KPU Office and the Jayapura Customs Office.
"These two buildings will take up most of the budget. For the KPU Office, the Governor of Papua has asked it to be a two-story building. Meanwhile, the Customs office's structure is severely damaged, so it must be demolished and rebuilt," he said on Tuesday, September 3.
The restoration period, he estimated, would take a month for buildings that only require fixings, while structures that need to be rebuilt would take about six months of construction work.
