TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Ministry and the National Transportation Safety Commission (KNKT) have deployed two teams to investigate the cause of the deadly traffic accident in KM 90 of Cipularang toll road on Monday, September 2.
Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the team will analyze the toll road condition considering many accidents often occurred in the area.
“I have tasked Land Transportation Directorate General and KNKT to evaluate [the road],” said Minister Budi as quoted from Antara, Tuesday, September 3, adding that a basic evaluation should be done since traffic accidents occurred in the area.
The minister made the statement after meeting the Coordinating Minister for Politics, Legal, and Security Affairs Wiranto in his office.
Budi asserted the case required special handling so a thorough evaluation is necessary to prevent recurrence of the accident. The ministry’s team would synergize with the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) for the study.
According to Budi, the investigation, particularly on the technical and structures of the road, might last for a week.
At least 21 vehicles were involved in the accident in Cipularang toll road, such as several trucks, private vehicles, and buses. Nine people were reportedly died and eight others suffered injuries.
