TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian said that he has deployed 300 personnel of mobile brigade to Papua tasked to maintain the security in Deiyai, Paniai, and Jayapura.
The three regions are gripped by rallies that turned into riots since yesterday. Today, August 29, the mass staged a protest in Jayapura. They also damaged the Papua People’s Assembly building and several office spaces.
A day before in Deiyai, two civilians and one Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel died during the riot.
Tito expressed hope that the mobilization of additional officers to the eastern province of Indonesia will prevent such incident as those from recurrence.
“We have sent personnel up to 3 Mobile Brigade (Brimob) company-level units,” said Tito in National Police Headquarters, on Jalan Trunojoyo, Thursday, August 29.
According to the police chief, sending the team to Deiyai and Paniai was quite challenging due to its mountain area.
“Only small-body aircraft can reach the mountain areas of Deiyai, a larger one up to Nabire,” said Tito.
Other than deploying troop reinforcements to the two regions of Papua, the National Police also dispatched personnel to Jayapura.
