New Capital City's Land Area Triple in Size Compared to Jakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The land area of Indonesia’s upcoming capital city in East Kalimantan will likely be three times larger than the entire area of Jakarta as the land prepared for the new location covers a combined 180,000 hectares.

“The 180,000 hectares land area is a combination of Kutai Kartanegara and the North Penajam Paser,” said Budi Situmorang, National Land Agency (BPN) Director General of Control, Spatial Use, and Land Tenure on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, as a comparison, Jakarta is just 66.2 hectares. However, Budi maintained that not all of the available land in the new capital city will be used to construct office buildings, settlements, and commercial areas.

Based on the new spatial plan, 30 percent (54 hectares) will be used primarily as open-green spaces (RTH) while 20 percent of the areas will be transformed into areas for public facilities.

He also mentioned that 90 percent of the land areas in the destined area in East Kalimantan are government-owned with only 10 percent of the rest being either privately owned or is managed by the public.

The Indonesian Government predicts that the construction of Indonesia’s new capital city will need investments up to Rp466 trillion, where Rp19 trillion of it will be sourced from the State Budget (APBN).
