Jokowi to Invite Papuan Figures to Discuss Development

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said that he will invite Papua customary figure and to come to the State Palace.
"Next week I will invite figures from Papua and West Papua, either customary figure, public figure, or religious figure to come to the State Palace," he said on Thursday, August 22, 2019.
Widodo, however, refused to provide details on the location of the meeting. Nevertheless, the President explained that the meeting will discuss the acceleration of welfare improvement in Papua.
He asserted that the situation in Papua is now resuming as normal. Apologize has also been conducted. The president said that such actions showed the willingness to respect each other.
Previously, just two days after the Indonesian Independence Day commemoration, a demonstration occurred in Manokwari, West Papua. The demonstration, which was held on Monday morning, August 19, 2019, was the aftermath of persecution experienced by Papuan students in Malang and Surabaya just a few days before.
