Pertamina Constantly Monitors Oil Spill Mitigation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pertamina Hulu Energi Offshore North West Jawa (PHE ONWJ) continues to closely monitor the mitigation of the oil spill from one of its facilities that have spread over the waters of North Jakarta’s Kepulauan Seribu (Thousand Islands).
“Every morning we constantly monitor from a bird’s eye view assisted by the air and water police unit (Polairud) and local fishermen to confirm the areas that are still affected by the oil spill,” said the Corporate Vice President HSSE Lelin Eprianto in a written statement on Thursday, August 15.
The oil spill originated from the firm’s YYA-1 oil well that is located at the Offshore North West Java (ONWJ) facility that leaked on July 12, 2019. The location of this facility is just 2 kilometers off of the North Coast of Karawang, West Java.
In an immediate reaction, the state-owned energy firm formed a dedicated team that is tasked to mitigate the destructive or negative effects of the oil spill. Oil containment booms have been stationed together with the deployment of multiple boats to clean the oil.
Lelin maintains that the cleanup has been intensely done both at sea and on land.
The joint mitigation team from Pertamina, the water and air police unit and fishermen split into two groups spread across two affected areas in Zone 1 where the oil well leaked and Zone 2 in areas surrounding the Thousand Islands.
