Jakarta Governor Reveals Cost to Host Formula E Race

14 August 2019 08:54 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan revealed that the entire funding likely needed to be able to host a Formula E race in the streets of Jakarta will reach USD24.1 million (Rp343 billion), which he says has been reported to President Jokowi in a previous meeting.

Anies argues that the money that needs to be spent by the Jakarta Administration is considerably more affordable compared to hosting an F1 race or the World Cup.

“Let me read out the list, hosting a MotoGP race needs USD7-9 million, an F1 race is USD29.4 million, Formula E is 24.1 million. We must think of it thoroughly as a host, Russia even spent USD 11.6 billion on the World Cup. There are always costs that need to be spent,” said the Jakarta governor.

He further explained that there are commitment fees that need to be spent by hosting organizers as Indonesia had done in hosting the Asian Games 2018.

“There’s a commitment fee that must be spent by an organizer,” he said.

As of now, Anies Baswedan said the funds will mainly be sourced from the city’s regional budget (APBD) as the Central Government has yet given certainty whether they would pitch in for the expenses.

The Jakarta governor also said he is optimistic that the Formula E proposition will be approved by the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD). A thorough assessment has also been done by organizers.
