TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - West Java Province has recorded the highest number of illicit drug users in Indonesia, with five percent of its population using drugs, according to the National Anti-Narcotics Agency (BNN). "This is the highest number compared to other regions in Indonesia, most of them are from the younger generation," BNN chief Comm Gen Heru Winarko said at the declaration of 360 Drug-Free Villages on Tuesday.
One of the factors that might be responsible for the problem, among others, is the province's large population and the existence of some ports in the region.
"If we do nothing to prevent it from spreading, the prevalence (of illicit drug use) would increase. Moreover, drug abuse will ruin the future of our young generations," he said.
The establishment of drug-free villages is expected to narrow the space for drug dealers and users, he continued.
"This is our common task to keep our youth away from illicit drugs and grow as productive generations. The declaration is part of efforts to curb drug distribution," Winarko remarked.
He called on all parties to work hand in hand to curb illicit drug use in the country, and West Java has been chosen as a pilot project in the war against drugs.
