Bali's Jembrana Jolted Again by Earthquake

13 August 2019 21:18 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Jembrana Regency in Bali hit by a tectonic earthquake for two days in a row. The latest measuring at 4.6 magnitudes occurred today afternoon, August 13, at 18:21 local time.

The shallow quake has no potential to trigger a tsunami, Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.

The BMKG’s quake and tsunami center head, Rahmat Triyono, in a written statement announced that the tremor was initially recorded at 5.0 magnitude.

The epicenter was located in the coordinate 9.83 south latitude-114 east longitudes, 176 KM southwest of Negara, Jembrana at a depth of 39 kilometers.

“It is caused by subduction activity of Indo-Australia plate that penetrates to the Eurasian plate,” Rahmat explained. The analysis revealed that the natural event was triggered by an oblique-thrust fault.

Based on the public reports, the tremor was felt in Denpasar, Nusa Dua, Jembrana, Badung, and Banyuwangi at II MMI level.

Previously on Monday, August 12, a 4.9 magnitude quake originated from 59 KM southwest of Jembrana, Bali, occurred at 06:08 local time. The tremor was felt up to III MMI level in Kuta.

In the afternoon, an earthquake at the same magnitude shook the province. The tremor was strongly felt in Jember, East Java Province at III MMI level.
