TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) is set to supervise programs and contents on broadcasting platforms such as YouTube, Facebook Live, HBO TV, and Netflix. The idea was opposed by many but KPI chairman Agung Suprio promised his office would never conduct censorship towards shows that are deemed inappropriate based on KPI's regulation on broadcasting standard (P3SPS).

“We neither conduct censorship, not blurring," Agus said when contacted in Jakarta on August 10.

He also asserted in an interview with CNN TV, that his institution was not in a power to block or ban content on the platforms. “We have no rights [to do the blocking/banning]. What we do is calling on [the creators or platforms] to make contents based on national values.

The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission previously planned to do the supervision based on public complain about contents on media like YouTube and Netflix but the idea was protested by the people on the internet.

Thousands of people signed an online petition to protest supervision towards YouTube, Facebook, and Netflix by the national broadcasting institution. The petition, initiated by Dara Nasution on change.org, went viral and 43,583 people have signed the petition as per 10 a.m. today.

They deemed that KPI was not a censorship institution. Law on broadcasting stated that the institution has no rights to conduct censorship to a program/content, as it is only tasked to regulate and supervise the implementation of P3SPS.

However, Agung reassured that his office had no intention to do repressive acts toward contents on YouTube and Netflix since the institution supports democracy and people's rights to express their aspiration. He added that the Broadcasting Commission, in doing the supervision, would refer to the P3SPS; as what the institution does toward programs on the television.

In the planned supervision, KPI would only deal with the executive officials from the media and not with the content creators of a publication. Currently, the institution is discussing the technical matter on the supervision with the representatives of the media.
