TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Megawati Soekarnoputri explained one of the reasons she invited Gerindra Party Chairman Prabowo Subianto to PDIP’s fifth congress held in Bali today, August 8.
According to the PDIP chairperson, the invitation was meant to convey a message that the two political figures are in a good relationship despite being in opposite sides during the 2019 presidential election, which was won by incumbent Joko “Jokowi” Widodo who directly faced former-presidential candidate Prabowo.
“It’s tiresome to always be in a ‘battle’ mode. We’ll take that role again in 2024,” said Mega in the event which was responded by laughter from Prabowo.
Prior to attending the PDIP meeting in Bali, Prabowo Subianto also met Mega at her home in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 24, in a non-formal event. This meeting was made popular as Prabowo was served with one of his favorite meals; fried rice or nasi goreng.
“[They] served me nasi goreng, next is to continue maintaining this family relationship. I am always treated with the utmost respect for such a long time here,” said Prabowo at the time.
Prabowo explained that he and Megawati would often choose contrasting sides in the political realm, but maintains that both are patriots and committed to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).
“It is normal to have differences, in the end, we would connect again,” said Prabowo.
