TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said that he has ratified the Presidential Regulation (Perpres) related to electric vehicles (EV) or electric cars. This means any regulation regarding electric car has started to take effect.
“I have signed it on Monday morning,” said Jokowi after officially opening the ASEAN Secretariat Building in South Jakarta, Thursday, August 8.
He expected automotive firms would be encouraged to develop the EV industry in Indonesia following the bill issuance.
Furthermore, the President added, 60 percent of the EV operation is depended on the battery, and Indonesia has various materials to produce it domestically.
“Materials to produce the battery and others are available here [in Indonesia], so we can design a business strategy to be a pioneer in producing cheap, competitive electric cars because we have the materials here,” Jokowi remarked.
Previously, the government went back and forth to pass the presidential regulation on the electric vehicle. After the Industry Ministry studied the draft bill for a long period, it was even long-canvassed by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The Perpres was hoped as a starting era of electric vehicles in the archipelago.
